Mill Valley Training Camp ride this past Saturday

This past weekend was the Mill Valley Training camp for riders to get in some nice long rides involving a variation of climbs, technical descents, and nice flats to practice a high TT pace. Definitely a ton of fun to be riding in a big group of riders who all knew what they were doing (for the most part). Check out some pics taken during the ride.

Zipp 303 Firecrest Carbon Clinchers - First Ride Review

If I said I wasn’t a victim of good marketing I would be lying, then again it’s only good marketing that I fall victim to in the first place. As consumers we learn about our products through the disclosure of manufactures and what they decide to share with us. With the hot release of the Zipp 303 Firecrest Carbon Clinchers. I thought to myself “were these the effects of good marketing”. At least That was what I thought. Then I rode them!

These are the 2012 Zipp 303 Firecrest Carbon Clinchers in the Beyond Black setup (with the exception of the decals which will be black) with black hubs, black spokes, and black nipples. The aero rims sits at 45mm tall with a brake-track width of 26.2mm while boasting a massive aero width of 28.5mm. These are equipped with the revised 2012 188 rear hub as well, adding more lateral stiffness to what is already designed to be a high performance wheel. As you read on, please keep in mind that I will be using references from previous rides with Mavic Ksyrium SL's, Shimano Dura Ace C24 clinchers, and Reynolds MV/C (same aero profile as the current Reynolds Thirty-Two carbon clincher wheels) carbon clinchers all equipped with the same Continental GP4000S 23mm tires on the same 2012 Pinarello Dogma 2 frame.

Campagnolo finally releasing news on their electronic shifting grouppo!

So after all the buzz, Campagnolo decided a while ago for the official press release on their EPS (Electrnic Power Shift) system to be today.

Of course those of you who are into the newest and greatest have heard about this already, and may have been given the impression that they are going to be available next month. After speaking with Campagnolo USA directly, we have found out that that is INCORRECT. They are going to have these units in for Distributors, 4 US Campagnolo Service Centers, and Press ONLY! Reason for this is that they want everyone selling these to have the proper knowledge and the correct information when installing, servicing, or even selling these beautiful Italian units. The EPS is scheduled for public availability Mid/Late Spring season if not Early Summer of 2012. However, pricing WILL be released for these soon, so pre-orders will be possible to ensure you get one of the first units that will land on US shores. Check out more pics of the final product below!

Knolly Chilcotin: a downhiller's dream all-mountain bike

A couple weeks ago I finally received my dream all-mountain frame: Knolly Chilcotin. So what's the big deal? Why is the frame special?

First of all, the frame geometry really stands out to me. With a 160mm fork, the head angle is at 66 degrees, the bottom bracket is at 13.5" and the chainstay length is 16.75". For those of you that may not be too familiar with mountain bike geometry, this transfers to a bike that will rip down hill with confidence, take turns like it's on rails and have a very playful feel to it! My ideal bike indeed! Furthermore Noel Buckley (president of Knolly) spent a lot of time refining this frame to exactly what he wanted and it shows in the details of this frame. Oh yea, did I mention that the suspension feels amazing! It sucks up the roughest terrain and gets you back up the hill with ease. Freshly done, ready to go, another French masterpiece completed for an excited new owner. Here we have a 2012 Time NXR Instinct Module+ ( Module+ means Time stem and handlebars were part of the order).

The client actually did not go with the Zipp 404 Firecrest Carbon Clinchers for this build. Instead, he will be replacing the wheels with the newly released Zipp 303 Firecrest Carbon Clinchers. We can't wait to see the type of riding this guy will be doing on our Strava club.

All new for 2012 from fi'zi:k is their Kurve saddles, offered in 3 different fits. The Arione (the snake), Antares (the chameleon), and Aliante (the bull).

3 main features that are on the Kurve:

Wing Flex - flexible wings that allows for more efficient pedal strokes by working with the rider, not against it.
Mobius Rail - Complete one-piece circular rail construction eliminating pressure points while improving flex
Tunable Nose - fi'zi:k's newest innovation. This is an interchangeable tension system at the nose of the saddle, allowing the rider to choose between a softer or a stiffer nose feel to the saddle.

Biking in the city of San Francisco can be dangerous sometimes. We're often worried about cars, motorcycles, even pedestrians not paying attention to cyclists. This is a cool little clip that was shown to me through a friend who's thesis is "urban renewal" and I gotta say, this is definitely a way to gain more cycling awareness.

RWB (RAUH-Welt BEGRIFF) is a known shop in Japan that's been in business for over 15 years. They are going to open an US location soon, so I am definitely looking forward to seeing their presence in the bay area.

The 2011 USA Pro Cycling Challenge Prologue went underway today with a fast-paced individual time-trial. BMC-Racing's very own Brent Bookwalter took 3rd place for a great start of what looks to be a promising tour for BMC-Racing.

George Hincapie finished sixth, Evans finished ninth, and Jeff Louder was 12th. We look forward to seeing the success of this promising team.

Here we have a Colnago EPQ frameset in white for one of our clients. The EPQ frame is an evolution from the previous popular EPS frame.

The EPQ is quite similar to the C59 Italia. Instead of the "master" style tubing, it is made with round tubing which allows the frame to keep the lateral stiffness needed to perform, but offering a more comfortable ride quality than the C59 Italia.

Team Europcar wins Stage 19!

Although Thomas Voeckler was not able to retain the yellow jersey after today's brutal climbing stage, Team Europcar was still in the highlights. Pierre Rolland took home stage 19 today after some tough attacks delivered by Alberto Contador.

The French celebrate today as Pierre Rolland is the first French rider since Bernard Hinault back in 1986 to win the L'Alpe d'Huez! On top of taking home a historic stage win, he gained the points to be in the White Jersey at the finish.

Edvald Boasson Hagen of Team Sky takes another stage win at 2011 Le Tour de France!

After coming in second to Thor Hushovd in stage 16, Edvald Boasson Hagen decided that today he will eliminate all competition. The young 24-year-old Norwegian star went into the 14-man break and timed a perfect attack during the final climb of the day with 11km left.

Highland Bike Park and Contour GPS camera make for a great day of riding!

While on vacation last week in Boston, I took a day to head up to beautiful New Hamphshire to check out Highland Bike Park. If you are ever in New England be sure to head up to Northfield, New Hampshire and check this place out! For many of us there is the misconception that bike parks are for hardcore freeride or downhill riders. This simply is not true and Highland Bike Park does an excellent job of making the park open to every skill level. Are there ten plus foot drops? Yes. Are there ridiculously steep and rocky terrain? Yes. While all of that is fun, really fun, for advanced riders, there are smooth, fast and flowy singletrack runs that literally every mountain biker can have a blast on! Check out the video below I took with our new Contour GPS camera that were sent to us just days before I left on my trip. Thanks Contour!
